Cardiologist
Dr. Sonja Fonfara is a Professor and Research Chair in Feline Health at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC). Originally from Germany, Dr. Fonfara graduated from the University of Hannover, completed her doctoral thesis at Justus Liebig University in Giessen, and worked as a general practitioner before pursuing specialization in veterinary cardiology at the University of Liverpool, UK. She went on to serve as lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Liverpool, and Langford Vets, University of Bristol, respectively. Dr. Fonfara obtained her PhD and Docent title from the University of Helsinki. In 2016, she joined the cardiology team at OVC.
Dr. Fonfara is passionate about cats, and her research focus is on cardiac remodeling in this species. She is the chair of the Cardiology Specialty of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM), a board member of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology, and co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology.
Special interests: cardiac diseases in cats, arrhythmias, management of cardiac diseases in cats and dogs
Dr. Christopher Drolet
DVM, MSc, DACVECC
Critical Care Specialist
Dr. Christopher Drolet is a small animal emergency & critical care specialist. He developed a keen interest in trauma & emergency medicine while working in different wildlife rehabilitation hospitals during his DVM training, which lead him to leave his home province of Quebec in 2017 and move to Vancouver to complete an emergency & critical care internship. Drawn to the challenges & the case variety of emergency & critical care medicine, he moved to Guelph in 2018 to complete his residency at the Ontario Veterinary College. Missing the Pacific North West, he returned to Vancouver in 2021 to settle with his partner & their rambunctious chihuahua-cross River. Dr. Drolet currently works in a private practice referral hospital in Vancouver, BC. He is passionate about critical care medicine, and particularly enjoys the challenges of managing patients with shock or traumatic injuries, metabolic emergencies, respiratory distress and sepsis. He also welcomes any opportunity to grow his skills in point-of-care ultrasound and mechanical ventilation. Outside of the ICU, Dr. Chris can be found hiking, camping or tending to his garden, and in the coming years, he plans to continue working on his sewing, baking & surfing skills.
Dr. Drolet appreciates the stress & challenges that can come with working in the field of emergency & critical care, and is looking forward to providing guidance to help you, and support your patients through their crisis.
